Richard Charles Travis

Richard was born in 1884 and died in 1918. He was one of the people who recieved the Victoria Cross. The Victoria Cross is the best medal you can get. It's for bravery. Richard died from getting shot too many times. He was a sargeant. He comes from Auckland.

Sgt David Gallaher

David Gallaher was born on the 30th of October 1873 Ramelton, Ireland. His parents were James Henry  and Maria Hardy  McClosekie, James was born in 1812-1894. Maria was born in 1844-1887. David's brothers Douglas and Harry who were enlisted in the Australian imperial forces like David they died in action. A fourth  brother was wounded in the region of the heart, a fifth brother served for overseas. Gallaher was a All Black he was even the captain, in 1922 the Auckland Rugby Union, decided to remember him forever, by awarding to it's champion club team the Gallaher shield.

Henry James Nicolas

Henry James Nicolas arrived in France in September 1916  and saw action. He  was born on 11 June 1891, he died on 23rd of October 1918 (age 26) near Lee Quesony , France. His year of service was 1916- 1918. He got the Victoria Cross and military medal. He was born in Lincoln, Canterbury. Killed in action.

Sergeant Richard Charles Travis

His full name is Richard Charles Travis. He was born on 1884 and died on  the 25th of July 1918. The medals he earned were the  Victorian Cross medal, Military medal and Croix de Guerre medal (Belgium) and the Conduct medal. The wars he was in were, First World War, Gallipoli campaign, landing at Anzac Cove, Western Front and battle of the Somme. When he died he was buried at Eouin, France. When he was born he was born at Opotiki, New Zealand. One time he stole two machine guns and shot and killed eleven of his enemies. He was promoted to sergeant and command of the Otago Battalions recently formed sniper and observation section and his further actions led to the award of the Croix de Guerre.

Sydney Allan Murrell Cole's Homework


Sydney Allan Murrel, born 31 Jan 1892, Hobart, Tasmania was the eldest of John Murrell Murrell (Manager of Huddart Parker Steam Ship Co. in Aust. NZ & Africa) & Lilian Mary (nee Ford) Murrell.

He was one of 5 siblings, the others being Stella, Nancy, Hina & David Murrell

Sydney worked as a bank clerk in Wellington NZ and was unmarried at the time being posted into the arena of war.

Thomas Marshell Percy Grace

Thomas was born on the 11th of July 1890 at Lake Taupo. He had a younger brother,William and they both attended Wellington College.  He was very good at sport, and was the captain of the top cricket and rugby team. When the war was declared in 1914, he joined the Wellington Army.  During the war he was known to carry a sack full of grenades and sneak over to the Turkish trenches and cause mayhem by throwing  them up and down the trenches. Sadly he was killed during the Wellington Army's legendery assault in August 1915.

Anzac Day

After our Anzac Day liturgy on Friday, Pukeko class went and had a closer look at the crosses on our lawn.  Each of us is choosing one person to research - we hope to find out who they were and what happened to them.
