Thomas was born on the 11th of July 1890 at Lake Taupo. He had a younger brother,William and they both attended Wellington College. He was very good at sport, and was the captain of the top cricket and rugby team. When the war was declared in 1914, he joined the Wellington Army. During the war he was known to carry a sack full of grenades and sneak over to the Turkish trenches and cause mayhem by throwing them up and down the trenches. Sadly he was killed during the Wellington Army's legendery assault in August 1915.
